Alterations to Your Property

Home improvement and natural gas services and meters

Before making any alterations to you property you should contact your gas supplier at the earliest opportunity. Such alterations might include extending your property, constructing or converting a garage, building a conservatory/ sun room, installing new doors or windows or changing the use of an existing room.

Your gas supplier will advise you what impact, if any, your proposed work may have on your existing installation including any remedial works required to ensure the continued safe operation of your natural gas service and meter.

Home Improvements and Gas appliances

Gas appliances need air to function safely and efficiently. Prior to undertaking any home improvements you should consider the ventilation requirements of your natural gas appliances and consult a Gas Safe Registered Engineer for professional advice.

Groundworks

When undertaking ground works even of a minor nature, such as gardening, kerb laying, or driveway re-surfacing , please be aware of the route of your natural gas service which in most circumstances will be of small diameter (20mm) and yellow in colour. Please take care when excavating in the vicinity of the service pipe and if you are having work undertaken by a contractor make them aware that you there is a buried natural gas service pipe serving your property.

Generally, although not always, your natural gas service will run in a straight line from the street  to your natural gas meter. (a property located on a corner might be an exception to this). Should you require further guidance on the route of your natural gas meter please contact your natural gas supplier.

Should you damage your gas service in any way, even if there is no escape of gas, contact the 24 hour emergency number immediately on 0800 002 001.
